Foreign Ministry hoists officially Asean flag

VIENTIANE,AUG.(KPL)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Friday held an official ceremony to raise the Asean flag at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ceremony was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith in the presence of ministers, foreign ambassadors to Laos, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant officials.
The raising Asean flag aims to morrow a significant role of Asean and also adhere to the agreement on using Asean flag which was approved at the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council in Jakarta, Indonesia on 6 May 2011.
The installation of Asean flag was also to promote and disseminate knowledge on Asean to the Asean member countries and other countries to know more about Asean.“This is an important part of contribution to the promotion of the common identity of Asean amidst its diversity and to fostering a Community building by 2015 as well as to further contribute to realising the objectives of Asean beyond 2015,” said Dr. Thongloun. He continued that “The Asean flag is a symbol of friendship, solidarity and cooperation of the Asean member states reflecting their aspiration for peace and prosperity in the region.”Therefore, the Asean flag was stipulated in Article 37 of the Asean charter which came into force since 15 December 2008.
Dr. Thongloun said that on the part of Laos, upon Prime Minister’s decision, the Prime Minister Office has issued a letter of notification dated 25 May 2011 on the implementation of the guidelines on use of the Asean flag. Adding by implementing the said letter of notification, to date, the Lao PDR has already hoisted the Asean flag alongside the Lao National flag at its Asean National Secretariat, Diplomatic and Consular Missions in Asean member states, Asean dialogue partners and member of states of the EU, as well as at its Permanent Missions to the United Nations and the UN specialized agencies.
Laos will hoist the Asean flag at its remaining Diplomatic and Consular Missions in other Countries by 8 August 2012 as agreed upon by Asean.
