Severe flooding continues in Thailand

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - Severe flooding continues to threaten Thai provinces due to extended rainfalls.

In Phitsanulok Province, floodwaters in Bang Rakam District was measured above three meters deep as of Tuesday morning.

A hospital in Wang Ithok Sub-district had been ordered closed after the compound sustained flood damages.

Local residents said the flood crisis had been its worst in a decade. They believed the establishment of a flood relief centre under the government initiative "Bangrakam Model", will produce long-term flood solutions.

In Phichit Province, seven villages of Pho Thalay District’s Thai Nam Sub-district had been hit by rain-triggered flashfloods. Local farmlands, particularly rice paddies and banana plantations, had been submerged by almost two meters deep.

In the country’s northeast, many provinces also reported ailing conditions.

The Kalasin Provincial Governor had called on health units to look after over 100,000 flood-affected households.

Health officials said already five people had died from Leptospirosis, while some 84 others were being treated.

In the southern region, a pause in rainfall gave way to receding floodwaters in Phang Nga Province, especially in Muang Takua Pa Sub-district. However, at least 10 schools had remained closed on Tuesday with many roads still impassable. (TNA)
