Police raid finds over 100 illegal Cambodian workers

PRACHINBURI, August 30 (TNA) - Thai police forces rounded up over 100 illegal Cambodian workers Tuesday morning at a Tesco Lotus construction site in Prachinburi Province.

The raid, led by Deputy Commander of Prachinburi Provincial Police Police Colonel Tekingpong Wangkaew, found a total of 111 Cambodians, including children, on the vicinity in Muang Prachinburi’s Bang Boriboon Sub-district. They were detained for further police investigation after failing to present any valid permit.

Police also charged 41-year-old Somchai Chutiang, head foreman of Rita Co., the subcontractor for Tesco Lotus, for allegedly harbouring illegal workers.

Somchai argued that the workers were registered, claiming that his company recruited them from Trat Province but relocated them to work in Prachinburi, only without the labour office’s permission.

Police will hold the Cambodian nationals in custody for further investigation before repatriating them. (TNA)
