Animal cruelty bill proposed to prevent illegal trade of dog and cat meat

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - The Department of Livestock Development will propose an animal cruelty bill to the Thai cabinet, in a bid to prevent the illegal trade of dog and cat meat.

On Tuesday, Director General of the Department Preecha Somboonprasert said the bill has been assigned to the Council of State for consideration, prior to being forwarded to the cabinet for voting by the lower house.

The senior official believed the new law will expedite more effective work in animal welfare and disease control, and also stipulate penalties for maltreatment of pets.

Nevertheless, he said the scope of the law needed to be widened, particularly on issues involving the trade of dog and cat meat. On this he said, his department will sound out opinions from all parties concerned. (TNA)
