Lee says stronger measures needed to combat corruption

SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday called for stronger action to fight corruption, calling it a prerequisite to become an advanced country.
"The government needs to have a stronger will toward rooting out corruption," Lee was quoted by a presidential spokesman as telling his new justice minister. "South Korea must have no corruption in order to become an advanced first-class country."
Lee made the comments during a Cabinet meeting that he presided over, according to the spokesman Park Jung-ha.
"The government has so far made efforts to root out the country's three major types of corruption -- corruption by those in power, educational officials and provincial officials colluding with local businesses. But the people still feel that corruption has not properly been removed," Lee added.
The president's emphasis on anti-corruption efforts comes as prosecutors are stepping up their investigation into an influence-peddling scandal involving a corruption-ridden savings bank and allegations are increasing over the incumbent Seoul education chief bribing a rival candidate to become the single opposition candidate in last year's election for the post.
