Avoid moves that undermine unity ahead of polls: Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani

TEHRAN, Sept. 7 (MNA) – Iran`s Assembly of Experts chairman advised political groups and figures who intend to engage in campaigns for the March parliamentary elections against sacrificing national unity for political purposes.

Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani made the remarks on Tuesday in an address to a meeting of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran.

“We do not have the intention of becoming involved in details of the elections, but as (members of) the Assembly of Experts, we advise all people to avoid undermining friendship and unity among revolutionists for their individual and collective preferences,” Mahdavi Kani noted.

On principlists’ efforts to achieve unity in the run-up to the elections, the top cleric said unity does not mean unanimity of various principlist groups, rather it means that they form a coalition and accept collective decision.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani commented on the latest developments in the region and said that the Islamic awakening was inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

He said the Islamic system in Iran and the wise management of the Supreme Leader greatly contributed to Islamic awakening in the region, he noted.

In addition, he warned that the global arrogance (forces of imperialism) is seeking to exploit the regional situation in order to achieve its goals.
