Religious democracy can come to aid of regional nations: Supreme Leader

TEHRAN, Sept.10 (MNA) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said that religious democracy could help regional nations meet their needs for a political model and prevent enemies from taking advantage of the current political situation in the region.

The Leader made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with Iran`s members of the Assembly of Experts.

The Leader expressed concern over the future of popular revolutions in the region and said those dictators, who were dependent on the Unites States and other Western countries, are being toppled one after another, an event which is opening up a range of possibilities for the future of regional nations.

“These possibilities should be closely examined,” he said, adding, “One possibility is that the religious intelligentsia might take control of affairs in the region.”

However, there are two other dangerous possibilities: the return of elements affiliated with former dictatorial systems or the establishment of sham democracies, which would be subservient to the West.

“In the current complicated situation, introducing the topic of religious democracy, as the legacy of Imam Khomeini, can come to aid of regional nations to satisfy their needs and prevent enemies from taking advantage of the present (political) vacuum,” he stated.

The current vacuum should be filled through providing the Muslim nations with a clear explanation of the concept of religious democracy so that they can guide their revolutions in the proper direction, the Leader noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader pointed to the enemies’ political pressure and propaganda campaign against the Islamic Republic and said that the identity of the Islamic system should be preserved in any circumstances.

In the short term, some people may have the misconception that adherence to the principles of the Islamic system could impede progress and prevent the fulfillment of objectives, but the country’s great achievements show that it is possible to adhere to the principles of the Islamic system and make progress, he explained.

“The principles should not be compromised due to political pressure and propaganda campaign of the sworn enemies of Islam and Iran,” he added.
