Lee reiterates strategic approach to green growth By Yoo Cheong-mo

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak said Monday that his administration is planning intensive support for the green growth industries, regarding them as essential to the nation's future economic growth.

"Some may view green growth as a choice issue, but it is actually unavoidable. My
government plans to offer intensive support for the green industry and other new
economic growth locomotives," Lee said while presiding over a meeting of
government and private economic experts in Daejeon.
"We cannot survive global competition in the next generation without securing
(new) economic resources," Lee said at the meeting.
Green growth, which refers to environmentally sustainable economic growth, has
been the key focus of Lee's economic strategy.
The president has asked for stronger government efforts to scale down the
consumption of fossil fuels and to devise a long-term plan to expedite the
development of new sources of renewable energy, such as solar energy, wind
energy, small hydro and biomass.
"The public and private sectors should be united in the pursuit of new economic
growth locomotives. Thus, the government has already set up a plan to invest 6.3
trillion won (US$5.5 billion) in the green energy field this year alone," said
Lee.
