Qatar Keen to Provide Best Programmes for the Elderly, Qatar's Speech

Geneva, September 16 (QNA)- The State of Qatar's has reiterated its due keenness to provide the best programmes for the elderly, as being an integral part of the society, as it is acting for their care and welfare out of a religious and national duty.
This came in Qatar's speech Mansour Abdullah As-Sulaitin, the First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered on Friday during the 18th regular session of the Human Rights Council, currently held in Geneva and which discusses the third item of the agenda which is related to the right of the elderly to health.
Abdullah As-Sulaitin said that the social policy of the State of Qatar for the welfare and care of the elderly is based on civilizational and solidarity values of the Qatari society, where the State has enacted several laws and legislations that serve the elderly group and guarantee them a decent life, in addition to providing them with health, psychological and social care. This, he made clear, includes treatment and private and constant health care.
The First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva further said that the National Strategy for Qatar for the elderly in the years (2001 - 2021) seeks to achieve a number of strategic objectives, including: working to adopt a set of policies and legislations that aims to improve the current status quo of the elderly and ensure their economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights, and the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination based on age, sex, and to achieve safe aging .
The Qatari diplomat explained that Qatar National Strategy is also seeking an effective and positive participation of the elderly towards pushing forward the economic, social and political development process, through their inclusion in the civil society institutions and taking advantage of their abilities and experiences and supplying them with opportunities for education, development and self-fulfillment and well-being for life and enjoy a productive and generous life.
Mansour Abdullah As-Sulaitin, the First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva, also said that Qatar’s National Strategy emphasizes the religious and community values, which call for giving prime attention to the elderly and their care and enhance their status in society.
Elaborating he said that Qatar's strategy aims to act for the development and dissemination of planning awareness of the requirements and needs of the elderly in all areas and at different public and private levels. It is also working on building a private base for the elderly to be characterized with modernity and dynamism to take into account elements of age, gender, disabilities and keep pace with the accelerating demographic, economic and social changes in the state and acting to link it with the regional and global information networks.
Abdullah As-Sulaitin pointed out that the establishment of Qatar Foundation for the care of the elderly, which HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser has founded and endorsed its basic law in January 2003, is considered a major qualitative leap in the field of elderly care in Qatar and a culmination of these efforts.
He said this institution aims to provide the best care for the elderly and maintain their social and moral, as well as to establish a systematic social support, which provides for the elderly in Qatar, working in cooperation and coordination with several points in the State and with the institutions and civil society organizations in order to consolidate and develop services for the care of older persons.
Concluding his speech, Abdullah As-Sulaitin called for finding mechanisms that aim to bring about a change in the stereotype of the elderly, in order to cope with the modern challenges, and the future changes, through reactivating the role of the civil society institutions and formulating a media strategy for dealing with the elderly designed to provide a positive and effective image for the elderly and works to raise awareness of the importance of the elderly and stresses the need for taking care of them on part of family members and the state community .
