Putin will remain the strongman in controlled democracy

TEHRAN, Oct.2 (MNA) -- For a long time now, it has been quite clear that popular Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin wants to become president again one day.

However, no one knew if Putin would restrain his ambitions and allow incumbent President Dmitry Medvedev to run for a second term in the Kremlin or if he would decide to run himself in the 2012 Russian presidential election.

But the question was answered during the recent addresses by the president and prime minister, and now everyone in Russia is certain that Putin will be the next president of the country.

Given the structure of Russian politics, which lacks powerful parties, and also the public preference for the current seemingly stable situation, Medvedev and Putin are gaining more and more consensus over how to share power.

A glance at Russian history shows that the culture of democracy never took hold among the people, and the strongman always rules, often for a long period of time.

On the opposite side, a part of society has been dissatisfied with the country’s political culture for several years, and they have established many opposition groups. These groups were mostly formed during the last few years of the Soviet Union and the beginning of the Yeltsin era.

Most of them are hardliner and moderate groups inspired by the leftist or liberal schools of thought.

Medvedev and Putin have gotten into many confrontations with the opposition groups over the past few years, in which the opposition groups articulated their demands in a much clearer voice than before. For example, they have organized many political meetings and demonstrations over the past decade.

Many political analysts have cast doubt about the authenticity of opinion polls in Russia. However, the results suggest that Putin is still the most popular politician in the country and many believe he will be the next president.

This has created an opportunity for Putin to establish a type of controlled democracy, which is exactly the opposite of what the opposition groups are seeking.
