Iranian diplomat calls for increased ECO-Mercosur cooperation

TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (MNA) – Iran`s Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Ali Ahani said that cooperation between ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) and Mercosur (Southern Common Market) is necessary because “we are living in a new period of history.”

Ahani made the remarks on Saturday during a meeting with the ambassadors of member states of ECO and Mercosur in Tehran.

He also said that countries member to ECO and Mercosur are located in two important and strategic regions of the world and have access to rich natural resources, a fact which shows their high potential for progress.

He went on to say, “We should believe that South-South cooperation can unite and benefit (the global South) in many ways.”

Ahani added that cooperation can go beyond economic sphere and focus on political and cultural matters as well.

He also said that if these countries unite and utilize their potential, they can have an influential role on the world stage in the future.
