EXCLUSIVE: TEPCO to Boost Thermal Power Generation

Tokyo (Jiji Press) - Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> plans to boost capacity at two of its existing thermal power plants in eastern Japan to secure stable electricity supplies in the medium to long term, informed sources told Jiji Press on Thursday.
TEPCO is considering increasing by 50 pct output capacity of three gas turbine power generators each at its Kashima plant in Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, and the plant in the city of Chiba, the sources said.
Capacity of the generators at the Kashima plant will be raised to 1.23 million kilowatts from the current 800,000 kilowatts, and that of the Chiba plant generators to 1.47 million kilowatts from one million kilowatts, according to the sources.
The power company has already started talks with relevant local governments, hoping to complete the capacity expansion by the summer of 2014, the sources said.
TEPCO is mulling the move amid growing calls for reducing Japan's dependency on nuclear power generation in the aftermath of the crisis at the company's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan, which continues to release radioactive substances after being badly damaged in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The six gas turbine generators were installed at the two thermal power plants after the March disaster to help TEPCO meet peak power demand in summer this year.
The company plans to achieve the capacity expansion by making the gas turbine systems generate more electricity using exhaust heat. The use of exhaust heat will also allow TEPCO to cut carbon dioxide emissions and fuel costs, the sources said.
The combined output increase of some 900,000 kilowatts for the six gas turbine units is equivalent to the supply capacity of a midsize nuclear power reactor, the sources said.
TEPCO is also considering moving up the launch of operations at the 400,000-kilowatt No. 4 unit of its Kazunogawa hydropower plant in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan, to May 2014 from the currently scheduled fiscal 2020 or later, the sources said.
