JAPAN'S FM DUE IN MALAYSIA FOR A VISIT ON WEDNESDAY

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba, appointed last September, is scheduled to make an official visit to Malaysia on Wednesday.

The visit by Gemba will be the first by a Japanese Foreign Minister to this country since 2006. The last visit was by Taro Aso, who attended the Asean+3 Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said the upcoming visit is significant, as it reaffirms the strong and long-standing relations between Malaysia and Japan.

"Both countries have established extensive links in the areas of trade, investment, education and capacity-building through the ‘Look East Policy,’ technology exchanges, cultural exchanges and tourism," the statement said.

Gemba will meet his Malaysian counterpart Anifah Aman and have a bilateral discussion on Thursday.

"Both ministers are expected to discuss bilateral, regional and
international issues, and cooperation of mutual interests," the statement said.
