Russian-Chinese scientific conference opens in Sakhalin.

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, October 11 (Itar-Tass) -- The international
scientific conference "Russian-Chinese cooperation in North-Eastern Asia:
to stable development and mutual prosperity" has opened in Sakhalin. More
than 100 people - - mainly scientists of the two countries, as well as
representatives of the authority and business take part in it. During
three days, they will consider issues of cooperation in the oil industry,
energy, sea bioresources, the timber industry and pharmacology.
On the first day, the sides will sum up the results of cooperation
over the previous years and discuss its further prospects. At present,
China's north-east is a strategic partner for Sakhalin. The region already
has experience of cooperation with China's enterprises. Thus in March this
year, the Sakhalin Region and the Chinese province of Heilungjiang signed
a memorandum on good-neighbourliness and cooperation. And in September, a
cement plant was opened in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. This is a Chinese-Russian
joint venture which includes the Import-Export Company Lungxing-Ruikai of
the province of Heilungjiang and the production and building cooperative
society Beton-Service.
At a meeting, which was held at the regional government on the eve of
the opening of the conference, deputy chairman of the committee on
development and reforms of the Chinese province of Liaonin Hu Jiangjan
told the regional authorities about Chinese investors' intention to begin
the construction of a new sea port in the city of Poronaisk (Sakhalin's
centre). Regular air communication between Sakhalin and the Chinese
capital is operating since May 2011.
The organizers of the conference hope that such a meeting will
strengthen ties between Sakhalin and Heilungjiang, and the Sakhalin Region
will become a favourable object for Chinese investors.
