Gold Coast secure O'Meara from AFL Giants

SYDNEY (AAP) - Oct 12 - Greater Western Sydney shelved thoughts of legal action against the AFL on Wednesday as they celebrated securing the top five picks in next month's national draft.
Wednesday's confirmation of 17-year-old Perth speedster Jaeger O'Meara's move to Gold Coast came a day after the AFL had stepped in to smash any hope of GWS completing a complicated deal involving several clubs which would have landed O'Meara back with the Giants.
GWS have received Gold Coast's pick No.4 plus the middle-of-first-round compensation pick Geelong had been given in 2010 for losing Gary Ablett to Gold Coast.
The Suns had gained the compensation pick after trading selection No.15 in the 2010 draft.
Gold Coast pick up the Giants' selection No.31.
GWS list manager Stephen Silvagni said the Giants were convinced Tuesday's four-club deal involving O'Meara should have been accepted by the AFL.
However AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson ruled the only way O'Meara could stay with GWS would be if the Giants genuinely traded the first pick in the mini-draft, and then completed another trade that brings the pick back to the club.
"We felt we had a trade that at least another three clubs were involved in and we thought it was a fair trade among four clubs," Silvagni told afl.com.au's Trade Week Radio on Wednesday.
"We were disappointed but we've accepted the ruling of the AFL and we move forward.
"Our legal advice said they felt what we had proposed was fair and equitable. The AFL got theirs and they felt their ruling was fair and equitable as well.
"We beg to differ but we certainly accept what the AFL has said.
"It's certainly unlikely we'll trade any of those top five picks.
"But ... if something does pop up that does look very attractive to us, we certainly need to look at it."
The Giants are close to striking a deal with Adelaide which would allow the Crows to select Ballarat 17-year-old Brad Crouch in the mini-draft, Silvagni said.
O'Meara, who can run 20 metres in 2.8 seconds, won't play in the AFL until 2013, as he's too young to be included in this year's national draft.
"We are thrilled to have secured Jaeger through the mini-draft," Suns football operations manager Marcus Ashcroft said.
Ashcroft said the chance to recruit the Perth teenager came after the original four-club deal fell over for GWS.
"We thought (on Tuesday) we were out of the running, but once that all came to fruition, we were back in the ball game this morning and it happened pretty quickly," Ashcroft said.
Gold Coast also signed 19-year-old Sam Day, who was taken at pick No.3 in last year's draft, on a new three-year deal which expires after the 2014 season.
The 196cm forward played seven games in 2011 before suffering a knee injury in round 15.
Adelaide have traded second-year forward Jack Gunston to Hawthorn.
The Crows exchanged Gunston and their draft picks 53 and 71 in return for Hawthorn's draft picks 24, 46 and 64.
The 19-year-old forward kicked 19 goals in 12 games in 2011, before walking out on the Crows last month to seek a return to his native Melbourne.
The 193cm, 81kg Gunston played 14 matches with the Crows.
West Australian Mitch Clark's manager Colin Young said the Brisbane ruck-forward would consider nominating for the pre-season draft in December if a deal could not be done in trade week with Fremantle.
