BENGKULU SHORT OF ARV DRUG

Bengkulu, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Due to the shortage of Anti Retro Vital (ARV) supplies in the country, starting this month, the M Yunus general hospital is reducing the distribution of the drug from biweekly to monthly, Coordinator of the HIV infected people's network Noviansyah, said.

"The drug is usually distributed once in two weeks, but not once in a month," he said here Friday.

This condition caused worry among the HIV carriers who had to take the drug regularly to enhance their resistance and prevent their red blood cells from destruction by the disease, Noviansyah said.

"The hospital only provides first line ARV drugs such as Neviral, Duviral, Evafirens and Stavudin which are consumed with two combined types," he said.

Noviansyah hoped the government, in this case the Health Ministry, could overcome this problem, because Bengkulu has at least 20 HIV/AIDS carriers who take ARV routinely.

Meanwhile, secretary of the Bengkulu AIDS eradication commission (KPA), Ana Mareta, said that KPA has established cooperation with the Bengkulu health agency and the M Yunus general hospital to overcome the ARV shortfall.

"We have coordinated with the M Yunus General Hospital and they said that they had made a request for another batch of the drug, but the health authorities did not respond," she said.

Further, Ana said that this month's ARV stock in the general hospital is hardly enough for the patients, while the supplies next month are still being sought.

"The drug is in fact available but the health office does not have the money to buy it," he said.
