Almaty, 9 December 2008, (Khabar) - Muslims around the world are now celebrating their main holiday – Kurban Ait. President congratulates people on Kurban Ait. In Kazakhstan, thousand of Muslims gathered on this day at the Almaty Central Mosque for a festive prayer. The head of state, Nursultan Nazarbayev also attended the Mosque in Almaty to congratulate people. Thousands of Almaty residents went there early in the morning to take part in prayers. According to the Koran, the celebrations start only after the festive prayer.

Absattar Hajji Derbisali, Supreme Mufti of Kazakhstan:
- Today, close to 2 billion Muslims around the word are celebrating Kurban Bayram. Therefore, festive prayers can be heard being said in all the mosques of our country. The majority of prayers have already been said in some regions depending on the time zone.

The President congratulated Almaty residents and all the people of Kazakhstan saying that thanks to tolerance, unity and stability, the Republic is developing well. Friendship and mutual agreement is the main pride and common value of all the people living in Kazakhstan.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- I congratulate all Muslims of all nationalities on Kurban Ait. I wish you health and happiness. Let us ask Allah to bless us and the unity of our nation and brotherhood of all people.
According to Muslim rules, after saying the prayer, Muslims make a sacrifice called “Kurban-shalu” which can be performed within three days. The meat of the sacrificed animal should be divided into several parts and distributed among the poor and orphanages. The remaining share can be kept.
Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- Business people and those who work have to help the poor, disabled and all those who need help. Our unity is our strong spot. If we help one another, we will be able to overcome any difficulties. On this day, let God hear our prayer. I wish all Muslims unity and prosperity.

Kurban Ait is regarded as one of the main holidays of Islam after Oraza Ait and is celebrated seven days after the end of the Ramadan or the Great Fast. On this day, many Muslims make a hajj to Mecca and Medina. The holiday also symbolizes care for people and mercy to the needy. On this day, people have to forgive one another and make friends.
