US has to recognize Iran`s NPT rights

Tokyo, Dec 27 - Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs said on Friday that the US has to recognize Iran's rights as signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty in the run up to direct talks with Iran.

Mohammad-Mehdi Akhundzadeh made the remarks in an interview with the
Japanese state TV NHK and on the basis of the US President-elect
Barack Obama's idea to hold talks with Iran.

"No country can prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from gaining its
rights envisaged in the NPT," Akhundzadeh said.

He arrived in Tokyo on December 24 to attend the 18th meeting of
Iran-Japan Political Consultative Committee.

He visited Tokyo at the invitation of his Japanese counterpart
Kenichiro Sasae.

During his stay in Japan, he held talks with Japanese Minister of
Foreign Affairs Hirofumi Nakasone on the issues of mutual interest as
well as the international and regional topics.
