By Bambang Purwanto
Jakarta, Feb 3 (ANTARA) - The Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences (LIPIA) continues to prepare and produce moderate Muslim cadres through Islamic teachings based on Al Quran and hadits (collection of traditional stories on words or deeds of the Prophet Muhammad that serve as guidance to understand and solve religious questions).
LIPIA has produced 8,604 alumni who now take part in Indonesia's development. Some of them serve as leaders of organizations, teachers, judges, governors, vice governors as well as members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the House of Representatives (DPR).
LIPIA whose former name was Institute of the Arabic Language was established in 1980 under the guidance of the Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Prof. Dr. Sulaiman bin Abdullah bin Hamud Abalkhail as its rector.
At the LIPIA inaugural ceremony on January 29, 2009, Prof Dr Sulaiman called on the new graduates who had studied four years at LIPIA to obtain a title equivalent to the S1 (Strata one) degree, to return to their respective community and apply Islamic teachings correctly and seriously.
"You are the ones who are able to prevent damage on earth. Keep the mandate prudently and objectively. Avoid extremism as Islam is a religion of love, brotherhood and does not recognize hostility and envy," the rector said.
Sulaiman expressed hope that LIPIA's graduates would become reliable cadres and leaders, especially with respect to the propagation of Islam based on Al Quran and hadits, and become increasingly devout in their service to Allah (God).
Meanwhile, Umar bin Makkah who represented other new graduates at the inaugural ceremony said they (graduates) would develop Islamic teachings in their respective community by conducting themselves as moderate religious figures.
"We will bring noble values in accordance with Islamic teachings throughout the country (Indonesia)," Umar said while expressing gratitude to LIPIA which had enabled Indonesian young people to study and deepen their knowledge about Islamic teachings at its campus.
According to Umar, LIPIA which has been in existence in Indonesia for about 30 years had produced ulema who develop Islamic teachings by propagating Islam in a moderate manner.
Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni who attended the inaugural ceremony said LIPIA as a means of education, particularly in e Islamic teachings, could continuously guide its students so that they could develop their abilities and participate in Indonesian development activities.
The minister also hoped that LIPIA's graduates become national cadres who could give their contributions to efforts to enhance bilateral relations between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
Thus, he said, the existence of LIPIA in Indonesia was greatly needed as the institute had produced reliable cadres and they were expected to return to their communities to develop noble knowledge through strong humanitarian approaches.
Meanwhile, Saudi Ambassador to Indonesia Abdurrahman bin Muhammad Amin Al-Khayyath said the existence of LIPIA in Indonesia was part of continuous efforts to enhance bilateral relations and brotherhood between the two countries and peoples.
On the occasion, the ambassador also expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government, especially President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, for the latter's attention and support to LIPIA which could carry out its mission in the country where the majority of the population embraced Islam.
Based on sn agreement between the two countries, LIPIA was planning to set up branches in West Sumatra, East Java and South Sulawesi in the future and open programs on general subjects as well as continue to provide scholarships for students, Abdurrahman said.
In the meantime, LIPIA Director Dr Abdullah bin Hudhaidh Al-Sulami said LIPIA in Indonesia constituted an example of respecting close relations between two countries s which were cemented by the principles of Islamic brotherhood.
The brotherhood was also strengthened by strong historical relations, the visions of the wise leaders of the two countries which become the center point (Kiblah) of Muslims worldwide, he said.
He said about 1,400 students were now studying at LIPIA majoring in the four-year program of syariah (Islamic law) for a title equivalent to S1 (strata one) degree.
The institute had also opened intensive study programs on Arabic and Takmili (pre university) as well as a diploma program for those majoring in pedagogy, Dr Abdullah said, adding that the students were studying at LIPIA for free and they even received financial assistance of between 100 rials and 200 rials (Saudi Arabian currency) per person.
He said t LIPIA now had five language laboratories completed with modern equipment, computer laboratories and class rooms with the latest technology, website on the internet with several links to Arabic and religious affairs sciences.
LIPIA likewise had the biggest Arabic library in Southeast Asia, with more than 30,000 book titles on different religious subjects, the Arabic language and humanities besides an audio-visual library and electronic encyclopedia with more than 10,000 titles.
With regard to extra curricular programs, LIPIA's Student Activity Unit had prepared and was carrying out a lot of cultural, educational and art activities as well as sports which are intended to develop the students' talents and skills, he said.
On cooperation with different institutions in Indonesia, the institute is cooperating among others with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry and the Tourism and Culture Ministry.
