VP WARNS REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITALS AGAINST REJECTING POOR PATIENTS

Pekalongan, Indonesia, May 21 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Thursday warned the management of regional general hospitals in the country against rejecting poor patients.

"Please report any hospital that refused to treat poor patients to the mayor or governor concerned," Kalla said when dedicating Bendan regional general hospital here.

Every human being always wished for good health, he said.

There were three factors affecting human health, namely heredity, local environment and behavior, he said.

"If the local environment is bad, sanitation will be affected. (Bad sanitation-related diseases) include dengue fever and itches. Heredity and bad behavior also have the same potential (to cause diseases)," he said.

The vice president said a good regional government was the one which had a small number of people suffering from diseases and built a good hospital. "That's why I call on the people to always keep the environment clean," he said.

He further asked well-to-do families in the country to prefer domestic medical treatment to foreign one. "I believe if we can afford to provide good services, patients will prefer medical treatment at home," he said.

While in Pekalongan, Kalla also visited chairman of the Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) Habib Lufti. ***
