LEPTOSPIROSIS CASES IN JURU REPORTED STABLE

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry announced Sunday that
the Leptospirosis outbreak in the Juru Detention Camp, Bukit Mertajam, Penang is
now stable and under control.

Health Director-General Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said no new cases have been
reported.

"Until 8am Sunday, the number of Leptospirosis cases being treated at the
hospital remains at seven. All six cases treated at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital
isolation ward and a case treated at the Seberang Jaya Hospital's intensive care
unit (ICU) have been shifted to normal wards," he said in a statement here.

Meanwhile in Pahang, a respiratory tract infection occurred at the Maktab
Rendah Sains Mara, Kuantan, involving 199 people who experienced symptoms such
as fever, cough, headache and flu.

He said the students involved have been placed in isolation rooms at the
school to control the situation, and they are reported to be stable. No cases
have been warded so far.

"A medical team visits the school twice daily to treat and monitor the
illness. It is expected they will come out from isolation Monday," he said.

In northern state of Kedah, nine out of 35 students at the Pendang Special
Model School who experienced respiratory tract disease Influenza A, have been
discharged from the hospital Sunday.

Dr Mohd Ismail said lab tests showed that the students experienced a
seasonal Influenza A infection which is not related to the Influenza A (HINI)
disease.
