TAIWAN READY TO HELP RI COPE WITH H1N1 VIRUS

Jakarta, May 27 (ANTARA) - The Taiwanese government is ready to help manage the spread of the H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, in other countries including Indonesia, a spokesman said.

A representative of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO), Timothy CT Yang, said here on Wednesday Taiwan would make intensive efforts to help manage the spread of the H1N1 virus in the world.

"It is urgent for every country to cooperate and exchange information to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus," Timothy Yang said.

He said if a swine flu case occurred in Taiwan, the government would share its findings with neighboring countries to speed up its prevention.

To prevent the H1N1 virus from entering other countries, Taiwan would play an active role in the production and development of H1N1 vaccines, he said.

"Jakarta is not very far from Taiwan, only a five-hour flight away. Therefore, if the H1N1 virus is discovered in Taiwan, the possibility of it spreading to Indonesia is high and thus cooperation and information exchange is necessary," he said.

Timothy Yang said Taiwan was ready to assist other countries in efforts to prevent the outbreak of or fight the disease.

He added that besides the prevention of H1N1, Taiwan has so far been active in the eradication program for measles, cholera, malaria, bird flu, polio, and type-B hepatitis.

"Especially for bird flu management, Taiwan has donated US$6 million to Vietnam and sent its medical team to Burkina Faso and Indonesia," he said.***
