CENTRAL JAKARTA HAS HIGHEST NUMBER OF HIV/AIDS PATIENTS

Jakarta, June 18 (ANTARA) - The number of HIV/AIDS patients in Central Jakarta is the highest compared to other districts in Jakarta Province.

Around 3,052 people were infected with HIV/AIDS virus in Jakarta, up to mid 2009, Hakim M Siregar, head of the Central Jakarta's Public health unit, said here on Thursday.

"Of the number, Central Jakarta has 1,277 HIV/AIDS patients," he said after attending "Jakarta Stop AIDS" event at the Central Jakarta Mayor office.

North Jakarta has 672 patients, South Jakarta 334, West Jakarta 362, and East Jakarta 127 patients, according to him.

The statistics were worrying because most of the patients were young people, he said.

Concrete actions by all elements of the community was needed to prevent the number from increasing, he said.

"The number of the HIV/ AIDS sufferers is just a tip of ice berg, because the actual number is actually much higher," he said.

Based on a calculation method of Asian Epidemic Modeling, the number of the HIV/AIDS in the world in 2008 was 41,240 people, he said.

If it was not controlled, the number of HIV/AIDS patients could reach 85,460 people in 2012, he said, adding that it would be frightening as it could spread to more people.

The most effective and cheapest way to stop the number of HIV/AIDS sufferers from increasing was through a preventive measure, Hakim Siregar said.

Meanwhile, Central Jakarta Mayor Syilviana Murni said in line with the national policy, the local authorities have urged the public of follow healthy life behavior by avoiding illicit drugs and high-risk sexual intercourse in order to prevent them from being infected with HIV/AIDS virus.

Anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns and consultations have also been conducted aspecially targetting the younger generation, she said.***
