Separation of Moroccan Conjoined Twins Successful: Health


Riyadh, June 21, SPA -- The Minister of Health, Dr. Abdullah
Al-Rabia, described as "successful" the surgical separation of
Moroccan conjoined twins "Azizah and Saeedah" which he performed on
Saturday with the assistance of a team of surgeons.

In a press conference held here last night, he said that the
separation surgery was performed without any major problems or
complications, adding that the difficulties encountered were in
liver- canals and pancreas, but "we dealt with them successfully".

Dr. Al-Rabia pointed out that the medical team was able to shorten
the time of operation to 13 hours and 10 minutes instead of 14 hours,
stressing that the condition of the two children is stable.

The Minister of Health congratulated the Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on the occasion of the
success of the operation, commending the King's continuing support
and encouragement for the medical team who performed the separation
surgery of the twins.

The Moroccan twins were conjoined at the bottom of the chest, along
with abdomen, heart tissues, gastrointestinal tract, liver- canals,
duodenum, pancreas, and parts of small intestine.

It is noteworthy that this is the 22nd operation of separating
conjoined twins which have been performed by Dr. Rabia over 19 years.
