Nvidia CEO Unveils Plan to Build R&D Base in Japan

Tokyo, Dec. 5 (Jiji Press)--Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang told Japanese industry minister Yasutoshi Nishimura on Tuesday that the U.S. semiconductor giant plans to open a research and development base in Japan.

Huang showed strong expectations toward Japan's artificial intelligence technology in industrial robotics, a field in which Japan excels, Nishimura told a press conference.

He also expressed his intention to work with Japanese artificial intelligence startups and cooperate in the areas of investment and human resource development, Nishimura added.

The Japanese government has proposed to Nvidia that the company boost its ties with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, or AIST.

In a meeting Monday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida asked Huang to increase supplies of graphics processing units used for generative AI data processing.

Nishimura said that Huang showed readiness to deliver more GPUs to Japan and that the country wants to accelerate generative AI development by cooperating with Nvidia.
