UNIVERSITIES TOLD TO SET UP INFLUENZA A (H1N1) ACTION COMMITTEE

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Higher Education Ministry is
instructing all higher learning institutions in the country to set up their own
action committee to prevent the spread of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus in the
campuses.

Its minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the move was a precautionary measure
to prevent the spread of the virus, as about 15,000 new foreign students were
expected to register at these institutions nationwide next month.

He said 70,000 foreign students who had returned to their countries of
origin during the semester break would also return to continue their studies
soon.

"The committee will monitor and detect any (H1N1) case so that immediate
action can be taken, especially for students staying at the hostels. For those
living off campus, the universities should take the initiative to keep track of
their attendance in class.

"If immediate action is not taken, the virus will spread and closing the
affected universities temporarily will definitely affect the students' lessons,"
he said after opening the 5th Asian Mathematical Conference (AMC), here,
Tuesday.

The five-day conference, the biggest in its series in Asia, is jointly
organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia and Malaysian Mathematical Sciences
Society (Persama), and attended by over 700 participants from various countries.

More than 500 working papers will be presented, including 50 by
world-famous mathematicians.

Mohamed Khaled called on Persama, with the cooperation of the higher
learning institutions, to carry out research on proficiency in Mathematics among
the people in the country, especially students.

"Research like this is important to find out how we fare in Mathematics at
all levels, whether we have been teaching the subject in the correct way or how
we can get students to be more interested in Mathematics.

"We will then use this research as a reference for the government in making
new policies and further improvements," he said.
