Samsung, Numonyx form alliance on new memory technology

SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest chip
maker, said Wednesday that it has formed an alliance with Numonyx B.V. on
developing next-generation memory technology for PCs and mobile devices.

Samsung Electronics and Numonyx, the memory spin-off of Intel Inc. and Swiss chip
maker STMicroelectronics Inc., will develop common standards for phase-change
memory (PCM) products, the South Korean company said.
The company anticipates that creating common hardware and software compatibility
for PCM products should help simplify designs and shorten development time.
PCM is faster and consumes less power than conventional memory products used in
digital applications.
"The tie-up with Numonyx will offer a more secure path for introducing PCM into
the mobile environment," said Kim Sei-jin, vice president at Samsung Electronics.

"We anticipate that PCM will eventually be a major addition to our family of
memory products, one that will nicely compliment our other mobile memory
solutions and ultimately increase our leadership in the industry," he added.
Common standards between the two companies will be completed this year, with both
companies expecting to have compliant devices available next year.
