Mongolia Counts 64.7 Million Head of Livestock

Ulaanbaatar, January 23, 2024 /MONTSAME/. According to the preliminary result of the annual livestock census, by the end of 2023, Mongolia has 64.7 million head of livestock, of which 29.4 million sheep, 24.6 million goats, 4.8 million horses, 547 million cattle, and 473.9 thousand camels.

 

Compared to the previous year, the total number of livestock decreased by 6.4 million (9.1%), reported the National Statistics Office. The number of goats decreased by 3 million, sheep by 3.3 million (6.9%), and cattle by 162.1, while the number of horses increased by 8.6 thousand, and camels by 3.4 thousand. In terms of flocks of livestock, sheep account for 45.5% of the total number of livestock, with goats for 38.1%, cattle for 8.3%, horses for 7.5% and camels for 0.7%.  

 

Arkhangai aimag leads the country with its number of horses and cattle, while Umnugovi aimag leads with camels, Khuvsgul aimag with sheep and Bayankhongor aimag leads with goat.

 

In 2023, the highest number of livestock was counted in Khuvsgul (5.7 million) followed by Tuv (4.9 million), Arkhangai (4.8 million), Uvurkhangai (4.7 million) and Khentii (4.4 million) aimag.
