PM Calls To Form An Int'l Coalition To Fight The Drug Scourge

Baghdad / NINA /- Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani called for the formation of an international coalition to fight drugs, noting: “The scourge of drugs and psychotropic substances has killed millions of young people around the world.”

Al-Sudani said in a speech during his participation in the activities of the Third Democracy Summit hosted by South Korea, via television: “We look forward to uniting our efforts in achieving our basic goals of advancement and progress towards a world in which all peoples enjoy prosperity and development.”

He added: "Our people had difficult experiences that lost many opportunities for growth and progress," noting: "The dictatorial regime plunged Iraq into senseless wars that negatively affected the youth group."

He pointed out: “The Iraqi society is a young society, with the percentage of young people reaching 60%, which requires commitments to absorb these youthful energies. Our government, from the beginning of its work, has developed plans and programs to absorb young people and benefit from their energy in building Iraq after years of fighting ISIS terrorist gangs.

Al-Sudani continued, “Last year, for the first time, we formed the Supreme Council for Youth, which is responsible for drawing up plans and programs and employing youth energies in our country. The council took many important decisions and initiatives, which pushes towards providing real opportunities for young people, and we launched an initiative to send 5,000 male and female students to the best universities in the world, to acquire modern sciences and learn about developments in precise scientific fields. The first batch of them left last month, and it included 400 male and female scholarship students, from various regions of Iraq".

He pointed to the activation of the National Strategy for Education, which continues until the year 2031. It is a comprehensive strategy that works to modernize the pillars of the educational process.

The Prime Minister explained: “The government formulated many reforms to develop the private sector and grant it facilities, and this resulted in providing job opportunities for young graduates. A group of operational initiatives were launched for young people, such as Riyada initiative, and the initiatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, which rely on innovation and employing skills of youth."

Regarding drugs, he said: “Drugs and psychotropic substances have killed millions of young people around the world,” calling for the formation of a global alliance to fight these toxins and scourges that are killing societies, especially young groups of them.

In conclusion, he said: We recall the tragedy of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and the systematic killing and genocide that the youth there face, which requires the international community to take a serious and responsible moral stance.”/End
