Leaders Discuss AI at S. Korea-Hosted Democracy Summit

Seoul, March 20 (Jiji Press)--Leaders of South Korea, Japan and other countries discussed measures against disinformation using artificial intelligence in a plenary session of an international meeting hosted by South Korea on Wednesday.

Participants in the online session of the third Summit for Democracy shared a sense of crisis over the disinformation ahead of the South Korean general election in April and the U.S. presidential election in November.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stressed that free and fair elections are the foundation of democracy.

Deep-fake videos and impersonated voices created by generative AI engines hinder people's political self-determination and confuse society, Kishida warned.

Last year, Japan led Group of Seven discussions to set international guidelines and a code of conduct on generative AI as G-7 president, Kishida also said, calling for international cooperation to fight disinformation.

Other participants in the session included South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and U.S. President Joe Biden. The three-day summit in Seoul started on Monday.
