Thailand Sets Up Ad Hoc Committee To Monitor Unrest Near Border

BANGKOK, April 24 (Bernama) -- Thailand has set up an ad hoc committee to manage the situation arising from the unrest in Thai-Myanmar border.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, in a post on the X platform, announced the formation of this committee, with Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara as its chairperson.

Srettha, who is also the National Security Council chairman, highlighted that the committee’s role would involve monitoring, evaluating, and analysing the overall situation.

“The committee will also be responsible for giving opinions and suggestions in managing the situation due to the unrest in Myanmar,” he said.

The Foreign Ministry of Thailand released a statement confirming that Parnpree, who also serves as the Foreign Minister, visited Mae Sot district in Tak province on Tuesday. His visit aimed to gather the latest updates on the situation along the Thailand-Myanmar border and extend support to local agencies and people in Mae Sot.

During the visit, Parnpree and his team received briefings on the recent developments along the Thailand-Myanmar border, with a focus on the safety and well-being of the local population in Mae Sot. They also discussed updates concerning the Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridges, reported the ministry.

Thai media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura, who stated that the National Security Council (NSC) has been tasked with closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry has been assigned the responsibility of coordinating with the international community and relevant organisations.

Reports indicate escalating clashes in Myanmar's Myawaddy since last Friday, as opposition forces sought to seize control of the city. Over 1,200 individuals have crossed into Thailand to seek refuge from the conflict, according to media accounts.
