Indonesia's KPU Declares Prabowo, Gibran President-Elect & VP-Elect For 2024-2029

JAKARTA, April 24 (Bernama) -- Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU) has officially declared Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the country’s president-elect and vice president-elect for the 2024-2029 term.

Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari announced the decision at the commission’s office Wednesday following the Constitutional Court’s rejection of appeals from both losing presidential candidates, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who challenged the election results.

Expressing gratitude at the event, Prabowo said : ''I’m deeply honoured. Most importantly, we’re grateful for upholding the democratic process as required by our Constitution.''

He and Gibran pledged their commitment to serving all Indonesians including those who did not support them, and promised to demonstrate it through actions.

Defence Minister Prabowo also called for political elites to unite and advance the nation after a challenging democratic process as he stressed:  ''The people expect leaders to work together for prosperity and to end poverty, corruption, and hunger in Indonesia.''

Several cabinet ministers, political parties, presidential candidate Anies, and his running mate, Muhaimin Iskandar, also attended the event.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court ruled that Anies and Ganjar’s claims of social assistance misuse and state officials’ neutrality violations lacked legal grounds.

The decision paves the way for Prabowo to become the next president, succeeding President Joko Widodo, who finished his second and final term in October.

The presidential and vice-presidential swearing-in ceremonies will be held on Oct 20.

In the Feb 14 election, Prabowo and Joko Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran, secured victory with an impressive 58.6 per cent of the vote out of 164,227,475 votes.

Anies, the former Jakarta governor, and Muhaimin received 24.9 per cent, while Ganjar, the former Central Java governor, and his partner, Mahfud MD, secured 16.5 per cent of the votes.

Since early morning, over 4,266 police and military personnel have been stationed at the KPU building. K9 units and police armoured vehicles are also positioned across the area to enhance security.
