CANCER CENTRE OPENED AT LOCAL VARSITY

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama)-- A one-stop cancer reference centre was
Wednesday opened at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Serdang near here by Women,
Family and Community Development Minister Senator Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

The Cancer Resource and Education Centre (CaRE), she said, was an excellent
place to get information on cancer under one roof.

"With cooperation among UPM, Cornell University, KanWork and other partners
it can provide best practices, technology and current news," she said.

The public can contact the centre located at UPM's Medical and Health
Science Faculty at website http:///www.cancereducation.org.my or call
03-89472706.

"People can get information on support groups and be referred to doctors,"
Shahrizat said.

She also said that KanWork, an outreach activity of the UPM-Cornell
Collaborative Cancer Education and Research Project (CaEd), would be allocated
RM60,000 to publish a book on cancer in Bahasa Melayu, Malaysia's national
language.

"Material on cancer in Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin and Tamil are very limited,
she said.

In another development, Shahrizat said up till last month about 10,000 women
in the country had participated in the Subsidised Mamogram programme to detect
breast cancer.
