8 more confirmed cases of swine flu, 2 Delhi schools send

students on leave

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) Eight new laboratory confirmed
cases of swine flu were reported Friday as two more leading
private schools in the national capital sent students on leave
fearing that the infection would spread within their
institutions.

While two cases were reported from Delhi, one case
each was reported from India's northern state of Amritsar and
southern state of Chennai and two each from southern
city Trivandrum and western city Pune.

In Delhi, a 13-year-old girl contacted the virus from
an earlier reported positive case, while the other case is of
a 28-year-old male who travelled from Bangkok.

The case in Amritsar is a 26-year-old male who
travelled from Birmingham.

In Chennai, a five-year-old girl who travelled from
Singapore by an Indian Airlines flight was found to be having
fever and cough during screening and was admitted in the
identified health facility.

The total number of swine flu cases across the country
has now risen to 268.

Meanwhile, two more capital schools Friday asked
certain sections of their institutions to go on precautionary
leave after some students were confirmed of swine flu.

One of them was Springdales School, Pusa Road which
has asked students of class VI and IX to remain at home till
July 22, after the school came to know about students of the
particular classes testing positive for swine flu.

St Thomas School, Mandir Marg, has also asked a
section of VII class to go on precautionary leave on Wednesday
after a VII class student was tested positive for Swine Flu.

Thursday, Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, had asked some
students and teachers to go on leave.

A private school in Pune also sent an entire class on
leave after five students of the section tested positive for
swine flu.

The infection could have spread through a student, who
had recently visited the US for a cultural exchange programme,
Dr Sudhir Pachpute, Superintendent of Naidu Hospital where
infected children have been admitted, said.

The school authorities today said one of the class VII
division 'Lotus' has been closed till July 21 as a
precautionary measure following advice from health officials.
