News Focus: POLICE GUARANTEE SECURITY IN JAKARTA By Bambang Purwanto

Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Police guaranteed the security for all people living in the capital city following two explosions at Ritz Carlton hotel and J.W. Marriot hotel both in Kuningan area, South Jakarta, on Friday morning, a police spokesman said.

"Not only foreigners staying in Jakarta but all the people living in Jakarta will get the security guarantee," Chief Spokesman for the Jakarta Police, Senior Commissioner Chryshnanda Dwi Laksono said here Friday following the incident that killed at least nine people and injured tens of others including foreigners.

Chryshananda also called for the people's participation in helping the police to maintain the security in Jakarta by among other things reporting things which arouse suspicion to the police.
"All the people must remain vigilant and together create safe and conducive situation," he said while calling on the people to continue daily activities and to be always on the alert.
He said the police would continue making efforts to reveal the two bombing cases in the hope they could identify and arrest the perpetrators soon.
According to him, all members of the Jakarta Police are not allowed to take leave except those who are ill or in grievances. As many as 18,000 out of 26,000 policemen of the Jakarta Police will be on the full alert to maintain security in the capital city.
Chief Spokesman for the National Police, Insp. Gen. Nanang Sukarna said the bomb blasts at the two hotels were only low explosives.

"The findings including black powder found by the bomb disposal team at the sites of the incidents show that they are only low explosives. That is the fact," Nanang Sukarna said in an official statement, adding that the bombs used in the two locations were of same type.

Home-made bombs of low explosive were also found at Room 1808 of J.W. Marriot Hotel and the police managed to dispose them of.

The police's investigation team is still working hard to find the cause of the incident as the parties responsible for the tragedy are still unknown.

The police presumed that the incident was a suicide bombing but they continued to look for evidence through further investigation on the location of the incident.

In the meantime, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo called on Jakartans to stay calm and do activities as usual.

He said the security forces keep on being aware of the situation in Jakarta to give security guarantee to all the people, he said.

Fauzi also said the government would give assistance to all the victims of the incidents at J.W. Marriot Hotel and Ritz Carlton Hotel, who are under medical treatment at several hospital in Jakarta.
"The Jakarta administration and the Health Ministry will give financial assistance for their medical costs," the governor told newsmen on Friday.

Chief of the National Intelligence Body (BIN) Syamsir Siregar also guaranteed that the security in Jakarta was under control but his party remained to be vigilant against things that arouse suspicion.
Syamsir denied rumors that there would be more targets of terrorist acts in other places.

Vigilance

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had instructed the chiefs of the National Police (Polri) and the National Defence Force (TNI) as well as governors and district heads across the country to increase vigilance against possible recurrence of terrorist acts.

"The law enforcers must be able to find the perpetrators or the masterminds behind the incidents," he said.
"I swear for the sake of the people and the government of Indonesia will take stern and right measures on the perpetrators and masterminds of the bombing incidents," the head of state said, adding "today (Friday) is the dark point in our history. The bombings were committed by terrorists".

According to the chief executive, the tragedy gave big impacts to Indonesia which has been in stable political and security conditions since the past five years.

Indonesia which is enjoying the good economic growth, conducive political condition and good image among the international community has seemed to be thrown to the back by the incidents.
"The incidents have damaged the security and peace in the country when the people are expecting peaceful atmosphere and together rebuilding our nation for the interest of the Indonesia people," he said.

In the past perpetrators of criminal acts managed to avoid legal measures but now the government would not let them become 'Dracula' in this archipelagic country, said Yudhoyono who called on the people to increase their vigilance while doing their businesses as usual.
Chief of the Antiteror Desk at the Office of the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Affairs, Inspector General Ansyaad Mbai said the Indonesian government would continue measures to stamp out terrorist acts.
"We cannot tolerate terrorism in any form. The Indonesian government will continue to fight terrorism by soft power or hard power," he said.
Indonesia was rocked by a number of bombing attacks including the Bali bombing I in 2002 and the Bali bombing II in 2005 killing hundreds of people including foreigners.
