MINISTRY TO REVISE BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS TARGET

KUALA KLAWANG (Malaysia), July 25 (Bernama) -- The Information Communication
and Culture Ministry will revise the target of achieving 50 per cent broadband
Internet access among households in the country, Minister Dr Rais Yatim said.

He said the revision was in view of the increase in the demand and coverage
as well as the usage of the technology in the country.

"Based on studies carried out by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC), there are about 26 million registered mobile phone users in
the country.

"This means that on the average, each Malaysian owns a mobile phone, which
goes to show that the usage of telecommunications in the country is very
encouraging," he said.

Rais had previously announced the target of achieving 50 per cent broadband
Internet access among households by next year.

He said that the 26 million mobile phone users would be made the benchmark
in determining the new target.

At the moment broadband Internet access stood at 25 per cent nationwide.

"We will also look into other data in setting the new target," he said.

On another development, Rais said the ministry would not allow the use of
mixed language on Radio Television Malaysia, the Malaysian owned radio and
television station.

"If it is true, we will investigate why and rectify it accordingly. We are
sensitive to any criticism on the use of language," he said.

He was asked to comment on the issue which was published in the forum
section of local Malay daily Friday.
