MUHAMMADIYAH : GOVT NOT SERIOUS IN DEALING WITH H1N1

Surabaya, INDONESIA, Aug 1 (ANTARA) - Muhammadiyah organization chairman Dien Syamsuddin said the government was not serious in dealing with the swine flu (H1N1) epidemic in the country.

"The government does not have a sense of crisis in dealing with the swine flue epidemic because it preoccupied by political affairs," Din Syamsuddin said here on Saturday.

Commenting on swine flu management at Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta, Syamsuddin said the aerodrome had body temperature detector but the instrument was not used optimally.
The Muhammadiyah chairman said he had ever protested the airport official who failed to use the expensive detector but according to the official, the instrument would be used only for those who have high temperature.

Syamsuddin proposed that in the situation like this, there should be an extra vigilance preventing the spread of swine flu virus.

"I have just returned from Europe, Singapore, and Malaysia and I saw that all arriving passengers at the airports there had to have their body temperature detected," Syamsuddin said.

He also commented on the treatment of swine flu suspects at the hospitals in Indonesia.

Syamsuddin said the swine flu suspects at government and private hospitals should have free medical treatment.

Asked about the spread of swine flu virus at a number of Islamic boarding schools, Syamsuddin refused to speculate.

"I have heard a lot about swine flu epidemic at Islamic boarding schools but I don't want to make any speculation," Syamsuddin said, adding that the concern for environment and health at the Islamic boarding schools was not as good as that at other places.

The important thing, according to the Muhammadiyah chairman, is that every Islamic boarding school student who has high temperature or fever, should immediately be isolated at a special room in order to prevent the swine flu virus from spreading to other students.***
