News Focus: FREE WATER, CALL AND OBSERVANCE IN RAMADHAN HOLY MONTH

Jakarta, Aug 22 (ANTARA) - When the Muslim month of Ramadan begins during the dry season in Indonesia this year, the clean water supplying company or PDAM in Medan, North Sumatra, offered free of charge clean water to all mosques in the city.

Normally all mosques especially during the holy month of Ramadhan need much more clean water for worshipers who would perform their evening prayers.

The production division chief of the clean water supplying company or PDAM Tirtanadi, Heri Batangari said in Medan on Saturday, (first day of the fasting month) that his company gave free of charge use of the clean water to all mosques subscribing the clean water for the full month of Ramadhan.

The free of charge water supply for all mosques is a form of social concern given by the PDAM Tirtanadi to the people, in a bid to reduce the mosques organizers' spending burden in carrying out religious activities services, he said.

"All mosques in Medan city get the free of charge clean water in the month of Ramadhan every year," Batangari said. Medan is the largest city outside Java Island.

Meanwhile, head of the Indonesian Ulema Coucil (MUI) North Sumatra chapter, Prof Dr Abdullah Syah had also asked the PDAM Tirtanadi to give its best service for the worshipers during the fasting month especially on the water supply.

The Ramadhan is the holiest period of the year for Muslims and
it is a period of fasting, night prayer and blessings.

In the Ramadhan, Muslims all over the world observe a
dawn-to-dusk fast and refrain from anything considered an
indulgence like smoking. The Muslims also aim to show patience, modesty and spirituality.

The Ramadhan culminates in the "Idul Fitr", a festivity marking the end of fasting during which (in the morning) Muslims go to their mosques or squares for prayers and visit families and friends to exchange forgiveness.

In the meantime, MUI chairman of Riau provincial chapter Mahdini, called on the Muslims to be economical especially because the country's economy has not yet fully recovered.

They should perform their fasting service in accordance with the Islamic teaching, he said.

From Ambon, capital of Maluku province Amboina Diocese Bishop,
Mgr. P.C. Mandagi, also called on Catholic adherents in this region to respect the Ramadhan fasting month religious services.

"As leader of Catholics and christians, I call on them to jointly support the fasting month service performed by Muslims in this region," he said on Monday.
In Jakarta, provincial administration civil service police or "Satpol PP" chief, Harianto Badjoeri said that his side would launch raid against the use of fire crackers considered to be dangerous or destroying the situation during the fasting month of Ramadhan.

"The Satpol PP will confiscate the fire crackers and give sanction to the carriers and traders of the fire crackers," he said.
In Medan, the provincial police chief, Insp.Gen. Badrodin Haiti had also prohibited the use of all kinds of fire crackers during the Ramadhan.

Meanwhile, the local police office in Bandung, West Java expressed to deploy some 900 personnel to keep control the regional situation in a bid to help Muslims concetrate performing services during the holy month.

Apart from that, mass organizations in the Indonesian capital were on Friday officially reminded not to conduct vigilante sweeps of night spots during the Muslim fasting month but report those violating operation hour rules to the authorities.

The Jakarta tourism and culture affairs office issued the warning one day before the start of Ramadhan on Saturday (Aug 22).

"The Jakarta police chief has made it quite clear that unauthorized mass organizations are not permitted to perform supervisory functions," head of the Jakarta tourism and culture office, Arie Budhiman, said in Jakarta on Friday.

He said sweeps or raids on recreation centers can only be done by the police, the city government's security and order agency, and his office as the regulator of all such establishments in Jakarta.

"If mass organization members notice night spots that operate outside the officially permitted hours, they should report the spots to the authorities," he said.

Budhiman said his office had on August 3 sent a notice to 1,129 business entities running recreational establishments in Jakarta outlining which of them have to close during the fasting month and which can operate with time limits.

Establishments that had to cease operations on the day before the start of Ramadhan, during Ramadhan and on the day after the end of Ramadhan were night clubs, discotheques, steam bath and massage parlors, pinball game halls, and independent bars.

Those allowed to continue operating but with reduced business hours (20.30 - 01.30) were karaoke and live-music joints. However, on certain days, they also could not open at all, namely the day before Ramadhan, on Nuzulul Qur'an night, one day before and after Idul Fitri (post-fasting festivity).

Violations of the rules would entail certain sanctions ranging from written reprimands to forced closure of the establishments or revocation of their operating permits, Budhiman said.

Aside from that, in observance of the fasting month, thousands of visitors from Jakarta and its environs made devotional trips to sacred places or graves including of the Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin and the Old Banten grand mosque.
In addition, a couple of days before the Ramadhan, school students in the country including in Jakarta have their holidays and will start studying on Monday (Aug 24).

Meanwhile, in Sukabumi district, West Java, some 32,000 residents took part in a traditional Ta'ruf parade in observance of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan 1340 H here on Thursday.

The parade's participants consisted of students of Kindergartens (TKs), primary schools (SDs), Junior High Schools (SMPs), Senior High Schools (SMAs), Islamic Boarding Schools (Pesantren) as well as members of Islamic mass organizations in the region.

Flagged off by Sukabumi Mayor Mokh Muslikh Abdussyukur, the parade around Sukabumi's main streets also included marching bands.

The chairman of the Ramadhan parade's organizing committee, Hilman Asmarahadi, said the parade was aimed at welcoming the Islamic holy month. ***
