18th session of UNWTO General Assembly

Astana, October 03, 2009, Khabar - The tourism industry suffered damage amounting to 90 billion US dollars as a result of the global recession. This data has been voiced by the leadership of the World Tourism Organization in Astana. The 18th of the organization’s General Assembly will open there on Monday and representatives of 142 countries of the world will take part in it. Suggestions on the restoration and development of the economic infrastructure of tourism will be discussed at the forum. Progressive ways of stabilizing the tourist activity which were included in a special project of UNWTO will become fundamental for the tourism industry of 150 countries world-wide. It is also planned to discuss methods of introducing the most advanced technologies for solving environmental issues in order to implant such notions as “clean” or “green” tourism.

Taleb Rifai, the acting secretary general of UNWTO:
-The formula for the development of tourism industry is the same for every country. It is necessary to invest in the infrastructure and simplify both tax and visa regulations. Kazakhstan has great prospects in this respect and Astana can be considered as a good example of rapid development.

Over 4 million tourists from abroad both near and far visit Kazakhstan on an annual basis.
