Ahmadinejad wraps up Africa, Latin America tour

TEHRAN, Nov. 28 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad concluded his tour of Africa and Latin America on Friday.

Talking to reporters at Mehrabad airport, Ahmadinejad called his tour of Africa and Latin America successful.

Ahmadinejad started his 5-day tour at the head of a high-ranking delegation last Sunday.

In his tour of Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela this week, Ahmadinejad secured support for Tehran's efforts to develop nuclear energy.

The president started his tour from Gambia. He held a meeting with his Gambian counterpart Yahya Jammeh in the capital Banjul and the two sides vowed to broaden economic relations and expedite the implementation of previously signed agreements.

The Gambian president said the Islamic Republic of Iran and Gambia have long enjoyed close relations and called for increased cooperation between the two countries.

Ahmadinejad arrived in Brazil on Monday for a one-day visit and met Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Negotiating, signing documents, meeting with the Brazilian Senate and parliament leaders, lecturing in Brasilia University, participating in a news conference, holding an interview with the Brazilian national broadcaster and meeting Iranian residents were among the Iranian president’s plans during his one-day stay visit in Brazil.

Ahmadinejad’s meeting with Lula received worldwide media coverage. In an interview with Brazilian state television, the Iranian president said Tehran and Brasilia can extend their cooperation by building nuclear power plants together.

The president next visited Bolivia. In La Paz on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad and Bolivian President Evo Morales called for the expansion of ties between the two countries.

“Free nations and governments should stand together to foil the plots hatched by imperialists,” Ahmadinejad said after holding talks with Morales in the Bolivian capital, Press TV reported.

Morales, for his part, said, “Bolivia is proud of its ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran in various spheres.”

Ahmadinejad arrived in Venezuela on Wednesday on the third leg of his tour of South America. Iran and Venezuela signed 12 agreements during the visit.

On his way home, the Iranian president also paid a visit to Senegal and held a meeting with his Senegalese counterpart Abdoulaye Wade who currently chairs the OIC presidency.

The two sides discussed the ways to develop bilateral ties and also the latest regional and international developments in a private meeting.

After the meeting, Wade said the two sides had discussed in detail plans for future cooperation, Press TV reported.

He also voiced support for Iran's peaceful nuclear program, saying countries against it have never been able to find any diversion in Iran's nuclear activities.

"I have already said that Senegal is against the proliferation of nuclear weapons... but in the case of Iran I note that the Iranian president... tells me that his country is simply developing uranium for peaceful means," Wade said.
