Malicious poachers detained in State National Natural Park
Almaty region, June 11, 2008 , Khabar - A group of malicious poachers has been detained in the "Altyn-Emel" State Natural Park as the offenders attempted to dismember an Onager, a kind ass threatened with extinction and which they had killed. The estimated damage they inflicted was 6.5 million tenge.
In the heat of their hunting excitement, the offenders didn't spare the animal's foal either. The group of 8 people who are residents of Almaty said they had come to the reserve area in two luxury 4x4s to spend the weekend, however, the company of friends could not explain why they had taken 3 rifles, a bag full of cartridges and a hunting searchlight with them.
Yeldos Ismagulov, chief specialist, Almaty regional administration of forest and game husbandry:
"The justice system states that a fine worth 2000 monthly calculation indices should be imposed per animal and 400 monthly calculation indices per baby, which means the group of offenders caused a 2800 monthly calculation indices worth of damage. This
amount has now been doubled in recognition of the strictly protected area where they had killed the animals".
The fine imposed on the offenders is roughly equivalent to one 4X4 vehicle which the poachers had used to hunt for the animals. A suit has been filed against the gang and the two vehicles will remain impounded until the court returns its verdict. The "Altyn-Emel" State National Park is a 5 thousand hectare site and a unique wildlife
corner with the rarest wealth of flora and fauna. Created in 1996, it was immediately put under state protection and the punishment for any crime committed on its territory is automatically doubled. (Khabar agency)
