At a national scale, some 300 deposits and detections have been discovered in 15 basins. As of today, Mongolia is ranked first 10 places by the coal resource; and first place by the coal reserve per capita. Thus, the coal is one of the competitive spheres of Mongolia.
Mongolia now faces a big challenge to fruitfully exploit its coal reserve which plays an important role in its economic development. It is required to make world standard processing of coal and to implement the newest policies on transportation and logistics such as on railways in order to sell coal with a price which is equal at the world market in frames of the policy on the sector.
In the year 2012, Mongolia exploited 31.1 million tons coal and exported 20.5 million tons, and it is projected that this size will increase by 3-4 times by 2025. As of present, about 60 companies dominated by state and local properties with foreign investments are exploring and selling coal in Mongolia. Moreover, the number of domestic and foreign investors for this sector is expected to augment. So, the government of Mongolia has expressed its intention to make a policy on giving equal and fair opportunities of laws and business to them.
