Bid to promote Phitsanulok as logistics hub

BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) -- The Transport Ministry’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning is attempting to push Phitsanulok province in the lower Northern region a logistics hub and boost the provincial economy by double and income to about 4 billion baht within 2023, said Chaiwat Tongkamkoon, director-general of the Office. After considering that Phitsanulok is conveniently connected with the North, Central and Northeast while its transportation basic infrastructures lie within the North-South Economic Corridor and the East-West Economic Corridor, Mr Chaiwat said transportation from the province could easily link with Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and south China. The province should be promoted to enable its economy to grow sustainably, he said. High-ranking provincial officers and the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning are conducting a feasibility study on factors that could make Phitsanulok a genuine logistics hub, said Mr Chaiwat. The study is divided into four categories, he said. They are making the province transportation and logistics hub, retail and wholesale goods centre, industrial goods production centre, and industrial logistics zone. If these plans materialised, the gross domestic product in the province could expand more than 3.7 per cent while the provincial economy would grow double and create new jobs which could eventually generate revenue to approximately 4 billion baht within 2023, Mr Chaiwat added.
