IPB Invents Feedstock That Limits Need For Cattle Grazing
Bogor, W Java, Nov 21 (Antara) - A researcher at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) has invented feedstock that reduces the need for cattle grazing.
"The new technology, called Hi-Fer+, can help breed livestock without the need for grazing land," Secretary of the Center for Tropical Animal Studies (CENTRAS) at IPB Amiruddin Saleh said here on Thursday.
He explained that Hi-Fer+ is an efficient technology in the form of fermented feedstock, which is nutritious for cattle.
It contains probiotics and high-quality feed complements, which make the product palatable. The feedstock can be commercially packaged and stored for a long time.
The feedstock can be easily transported and distributed and will benefit farmers and the livestock industry, Saleh added.
Hi-Fer+ technology has been invented by Dr. Suryahadi, a researcher and the head of CENTRAS LPPM IPB.
CENTRAS` studies showed that Hi-Fer+ can completely replace conventional animal fodder.
Using only Hi-Fer+ for livestock can increase an animal`s weight by an average of 1.48 kg per day.
The technology will help farmers feed cattle in sparsely vegetated areas or urban areas.
The other advantage is that Hi-Fer+ can be used easily. It is as simple as administering concentrates in measured doses for cattle, Saleh noted.
Studies also showed that Hi-Fer+ can make the odor of cattle feces less repugnant and reduce air pollution.
The invention of Hi-Fer+ is part of IPB`s efforts to use science and technology to empower communities.
Trials of Hi-Fer+ have received positive feedback from the community and the CV Anugrah Farm of Ciampea Subdistrict, Bogor District, East Java.
Going forward, farmers will no longer need to seek land for cattle grazing if they use Hi-Fer.
