No ban on financial transactions of Iranians by Thai banks
BANGKOK, August 11 (TNA) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has announced that there has been no ban on Thai banks to offer financial transaction services to Iranian people in the country.
BOT Assistant Governor Somboon Chitpenthom, who oversees financial institutes, told journalists of the stance on Friday, dismissing as groundless reports that his central bank has prohibited commercial banks from offering financial transaction services to Iranian people in Thailand.
The BOT assistant governor stressed that, like other member countries of the United Nations, Thailand strictly follows all UN resolutions and BOT has sent a circulation letter to all financial institutes in Thailand to strictly follow a recent resolution of the Thai Cabinet on a ban on financial transactions of only individuals whose names are on the sanction list announced by UN Security Council (UNSC).
"BOT has not imposed any financial transaction ban on any citizen or tourist of any country. A recent check found that Iranian tourists in Thailand can normally operate their financial transactions with commercial banks in Thailand," affirmed the BOT assistant governor.
According to the BOT executive, he has instructed commercial banks, cited by the reports, to launch a thorough probe and quickly clarify the alleged cases. (TNA)
