Royal Selangor Opens Flagship Outlet In Cambridge
By Joshua Foong
LONDON, Dec 23(Bernama) -- After 30 years of selling its products in the
United Kingdom, Royal Selangor, a homegrown Malaysian family-owned business now
into its fourth generation, has opened its first standalone retail outlet in
Cambridge.
"Royal Selangor has been in Harrods for at least 30 years, the past 13 as a
concession; Harrods has grown to become our largest single sales point in
London," said Royal Selangor UK director Peter Coleman in an interview with
Bernama.
He said the expansion to Rose Crescent made Royal Selangor's outlet
the first of its kind in the UK, exclusively for the sales of its well-known and
quality pewter ware.
Rose Crescent is an iconic street in Cambridge, housing the historic Market
Square since the middle ages.
The outlet is located amongst a beautiful, pedestrianised crescent of
buildings in the Old Quarter, close to some of the most famous Cambridge
Colleges: King’s, Trinity and St John’s.
"Cambridge offers an excellent combination of the factors we look for when
considering a new retail outlet: affluent locals, tourism and a flourishing
business community in an historic English city," he added.
Coleman also said there was no officially defined pewter market size in
the UK, however, Royal Selangor was considered the market leader both
in Britain and in many other world markets.
"We decided against an official opening ceremony on this occasion in June,
preferring a soft launch, although there will be several post-opening events in
the shop in 2012, designed to introduce Royal Selangor's pewter to Cambridge
residents," Coleman said.
The company first began trading in Malaysia in 1885 as makers of fine pewter
products.
Royal Selangor - the "Royal" was granted by the Sultan of Selangor in 1979 -
and reflects the quality of the pewter and respect for the family, which has
been crafting its products since 1885.
