Students In Padang Showcase craft Products Recycled From Junk

Padang, West Sumatra, Nov 25 (Antara) - Hundreds of students in Padang exhibited their craft products made from junk at the Padang Recycle Expo II 2014 event. The exhibition is being organized by the Padang Environmental Impact Control Agency (Bapedalda) on Nov 24-27, in Plaza Andalas Padang. The participants hail from local junior and senior high schools. Head of Padang Bapedalda Edi Hasymi stated here on Tuesday that several schools are taking part in the event to showcase their craft products. "There are 40 booths in the exhibition. Every school is showcasing its own craft products made from junk," he reported. In the meantime, Padang Vice Mayor Emzalmi stated that the exhibition is being held to encourage people to recycle junk. "Junk is often synonymous with dirty and smelly things. But, in the hands of innovative people, junk can be transformed into interesting products and has economic value," he noted. Emzalmi remarked that the "Clean Padang" program would be realized sooner if small and medium enterprises (UKM) adopted a more innovative approach to handling their wastes. He also persuaded the people to segregate their household garbage into organic and inorganic wastes. Inorganic garbage could be recycled to create products while the organic garbage can be used to make fertilizer. "Trash segregation should be started by us at the household level to promote net culture," he added.
