WORKS PLANNED AHEAD OF 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF CULTIVATION

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ In 2019, Mongolia will mark the 60th anniversary of bringing virgin lands under cultivation and developing independent agriculture. The Cabinet approved a work plan to be implemented ahead of the historic anniversary.
Three Campaigns for Reclaiming Virgin Lands were held in 1959, 1976 and 2008. At the First Campaign, 246 thousand hectares of land was cultivated, 334 thousand hectares of land planted and 315 thousand tons of crops were harvested. With 12 state farms established during the Second Campaign, 250 thousand hectares of land was newly-cultivated and wheat was planted on 560-670 thousand hectares of land to harvest 680-860 thousand tons of crops. As a result, Mongolia fully provided its domestic need and the surplus was exported.
As of today, 1200 entities are running operations in wheat planting, and more than 370 entities operate in vegetable planting. A total of 60 thousand farmers are working in crop production while 35 thousand households are farming vegetables, fruit and berries.
