Efforts Paid to Prevent Damage from Disastrous Abnormal Weather

Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- Great efforts have been paid to coping with drought, fierce heat, flooding and other disastrous abnormal weather in different parts of the country.

Officials and workers in South Hwanghae Province has completed the dry-field irrigation project planned this year and is building enough facilities for securing water in anticipation of possible drought.

They have inspected reservoirs, irrigation waterways and embankments of rivers to prevent farmlands from being washed away and damage to crops due to flood and heavy rain and pushed ahead with the work to complete the dredging and repair of embankments with the main emphasis put on high-risk medium and small rivers.

Kangwon Province has taken practical measures to perfect the drainage system such as the repair and maintenance of drainage pumps, drainage pumping stations and emptying gates.

After working out a detailed plan for river improvement, Rason City conducted the ideological offensive to give full play to the mental power of the masses and dredged more than 10 medium and small rivers extending over 40 km and built masonry, thus increasing the water-passing capacity.

And it planted trees and flower shrubs of good species around rivers and enhances the stability of embankments.

North Phyongan Province set a stage-by-stage goal for the restoration and perfection of irrigation facilities and is pushing ahead with the construction of pumping stations, assembly of pumping equipment and lying of pipes. -0-
