Riyadh, October 09, 2023, SPA -- Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz inaugurated the meeting of Arab ministers responsible for climate affairs in Riyadh today. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Climate Week, which is being hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In a speech during the meeting, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said, "We congratulate our brothers in Egypt on the outstanding success in organizing the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27), and on the significant achievements they made for developing countries, as they have maintained the momentum for implementing the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement in line with their fundamental principles and despite the challenges and diverse perspectives involved".
"We also support our brothers in the United Arab Emirates and affirm our solidarity with them as Arab countries to achieve balanced and comprehensive aspirations during their upcoming presidency of COP28 in Dubai", he added.
The minister underscored the development and environmental challenges faced by countries in the region, including energy security, desertification, land degradation, water scarcity, and other economic, environmental, and social issues. He emphasized that tackling climate change is a collective responsibility, with varied responsibilities between developed and developing nations as outlined in international agreements, considering their historical contributions to greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, he acknowledged that each region has its unique circumstances, necessitating diverse approaches and implementation mechanisms to effectively address this pressing challenge.
